BuildBy1st
A subscription website builder that generates a complete, industry-specific site from a short questionnaire — then lets the owner edit and publish it on their own domain.
The problem
Small business owners get two bad options. Template builders hand them a blank canvas and a monthly bill, and they still end up with something that looks like everyone else. A custom build is out of reach for a brand-new business that needs to be online this week.
The approach
BuildBy1st sits in the middle. The customer answers a short set of guided questions — industry, personality, services, location — and the platform generates a Design DNA: palette, type pairing, section structure, imagery and copy that actually match that trade. From there they land in a live visual editor, not a wall of settings.
What got built
- 201 industry packs across 20 categories — a plumbing site and a med spa site are structured, worded and photographed differently, because they should be.
- Live visual editor with device previews, theme controls, 31 palettes and 18 font pairings — desktop sidebar and a mobile bottom-sheet UI that actually works on a phone.
- Publishing pipeline — every site publishes to its own subdomain with an issued SSL certificate, or to a customer-owned custom domain with a guided DNS wizard.
- Stripe subscription billing — monthly and annual plans, webhooks, a self-serve billing portal, and publishing gated on an active subscription.
- Lead capture that closes the loop — contact and quote forms store submissions and email the business owner instantly, with an inbox built into the editor.
- An AI assistant for premium customers that rewrites sections, drafts headlines, generates FAQs and writes per-page SEO.
The result
BuildBy1st runs as a live product on its own domain with real customers building real sites. It is the clearest answer to “can you build software, not just websites?” — because the whole thing is the answer.
